| 1940 SEASON REVIEW |
The 1940 season was not a very good year for the Washington Senators. The team finished with a 63-91 record, which put us in last place in the American League, only the Cubs had a worse record in baseball. The Senators have a pretty good starting rotation, but they didn’t get much offensive help. Ken Chase led the team in wins with a 15-17 record and a team-leading era of 2.87. Al Javery led the team in saves with 14 and Eddie Smith had a 10-19 record but a good era of 3.63. The team leader in home run’s was Sam Chapman with 21 while Jimmie Foxx led the team in hitting and RBI with .272 and 77. Joe Gordon, Birdie Tebbetts and Joe Gallagher had very disappointing seasons as they were expecting to help out the offensive.
Senator’s GM decided that he would be very active in the off season and spend money to upgrade this team. We were able to get 6 free agent to sign contracts to play in Washington in 1941. The 6 FA were pitchers Marius Russo and Johnny Murphy, catcher Bennie Warren, third baseman Lew Riggs, and left fielders Pete Fox and Earl Averill. All six of these players are expected to see lots of playing time for Washington this year. Russo will become the ace of the staff, which the Senators hope will make Smith, Chase and Bowman better pitchers as they all drop a spot in the rotation. Murphy will now be the closer, which moves Javery to the setup spot; this should make the bullpen stronger. The offense will change big time, as Warren will share the catching duties with Tebbetts. In the outfield Gallagher will move to left field, Chapman will take over center field and Fox and Averill will play right field. In the infield Riggs will be the new third baseman. These changes should help improve both the offense and defense. With all these changes Washington is hoping to get 80 wins this coming season. Lastly, they feel they had an excellent rookie draft as they were able to pickup center fielder Sid Gordon in the first round (he should be a star player), pitcher Johnny Beazley in the 2nd round (he could become the ace of this team). Also in the fourth round we were able to pickup right fielder Ned Harris- who could be a starter for many years (Washington was very surprised he slipped to the fourth round).
